Simplifying the Processing of Ultra-Hydrophobic Coated Lenses Using the HPE-990
If you operate or work at an optical shop, you’ve probably heard something like this at least once:
“During processing, the ultra-hydrophobic coated lens slipped, so the lens shape I expected didn’t come out.”
During lens processing—especially with ultra-hydrophobic coated lenses—the surface is so smooth and sensitive that even a slight mismatch in conditions can cause the lens to slip easily. When this happens repeatedly, it leads to reprocessing or lens replacement, increasing both time and cost.
So today, I’m going to explain Huvitz’s HPE-990 lens edger, which is optimized for ultra-hydrophobic coated lens processing, and introduce in detail, step by step, how to stably process ultra-hydrophobic coated lenses using this device.
Shall we take a look together?
Why the HPE-990 for Ultra-Hydrophobic Coated Lens Processing?
The Huvitz HPE-990 lens edger features three key functions — a powerful wheel motor, precise axis control with a stable clamping system, and a dedicated ultrahydrophobic mode — which minimize slipping and axis misalignment that can easily occur when processing ultra-hydrophobic coated lenses, ensuring high-quality, precise results.
1. Stable and Fast Processing with a Powerful Wheel Motor
The HPE-990 is equipped with a 1,250W high-performance wheel motor, delivering about 1.7 times more power than previous models. This allows for stable and precise processing of both ultra-hydrophobic coated lenses and high-curvature lenses without vibration.
2. Enhanced Clamping System for Perfect Lens Stabilization
The improved clamping system combined with the Ø22mm Xtra Large block adapter securely holds the lens over a wider surface area. This prevents the lens from slipping during processing and minimizes processing errors.
3. Dedicated Ultra-Hydrophobic Mode for Safer Processing
The ultra-hydrophobic dedicated mode automatically optimizes pressure, speed, and safety settings based on the lens characteristics, providing an ideal environment for safer and more precise processing.
Ultra-Hydrophobic Coated Lens Processing Using the HPE-990
Step 1 I Clean the prepared lenses thoroughly
preparing for lens processing, especially for ultra-hydrophobic coated lenses, it is essential to clean the lens surface thoroughly using an ultrasonic cleaner or a microfiber cloth to remove any dust or debris. Since fine particles on the surface react sensitively to moisture, proper cleaning before processing is crucial. If any moisture remains, the adhesion of the blocking tape can weaken, increasing the risk of the lens slipping during processing.
Step 2 I Accurate Lens Blocking
Always use a new Leap Tape during blocking to ensure strong adhesion. Use the Huvitz Auto Blocker HAB-910 to perform the blocking process. The device automatically recognizes the lens, attaches the block adapter, and precisely positions the block at the center, making the entire process much easier and more efficient.
The HPE-990 is equipped with an Xtra Large clamp and a Lip Block, allowing the lens to be securely fixed over a wider surface area compared to previous models. This ensures stable and slip-free fixation, even for sensitive coatings such as those on ultra-hydrophobic coated lenses. After blocking, press the Lip Block to firmly attach the tape to the lens surface.
Step 3 I Set the Ultra-Hydrophobic Processing Mode
Use the Hydrophobic Lens Mode on the HPE-990 to optimize the processing conditions according to the characteristics of ultra-hydrophobic coated lenses. Once this mode is activated, the device automatically adjusts the settings to ensure optimal processing results.
√ Optimized Clamp Pressure : Maintains secure lens fixation suitable for ultra-hydrophobic coatings
√ Controlled Rotation Speed : Prevents the lens from slipping during processing
√ Safety Processing Options : Automatically adjusts entry speed and pressure to minimize lens damage
By combining these functions, the HPE-990 effectively prevents vibration and slipping during lens processing, delivering more precise and stable results.
Ultra-hydrophobic coated lenses offer excellent water resistance and cleanliness for wearers, but from an optical shop’s perspective, they can be challenging and complex to process. However, the combination of Huvitz’s HPE-990 and HAB-910 provides the perfect solution for processing these demanding lenses.
√ Precise Lens Blocking
√ Processing Mode Specialized for Ultra-Hydrophobic Coated Lenses
√ Stable and Secure Lens Fixation With all these features combined, you can handle ultra-hydrophobic coated lens processing confidently and efficiently!
